Smash Hit

What an amazing time we live in as writers! Innovative ideas are constantly cropping up that are pushing the boundaries of publishing and bringing writers and readers closer. Here’s an exciting example I just found out about: World’s Best Story, “the first social contest” to find a big, bold breakout tale with huge audience appeal. Aspiring authors will be reviewed and voted on by a community of volunteer readers and the final winner selected by a panel of best-selling authors.

The grand prize winner will have his/her book published by FastPencilPREMIERE, an “author imprint service” that has represented such best-selling writers as Steven Pressfield, who wrote one of my favorite guides, The War of Art, and Mark Victor Hansen of the Chicken Soup Series fame.

The six-month long contest focuses on finding a manuscript that has the potential to attract audiences across a range of mediums, from books to the big screen. Aspiring authors in popular genres can submit their story concept and sample chapter for review by readers and the panel of writers who will help select ten finalists and a grand prize winner.

“Our goal is to revolutionize the traditional literary contest,” says Vincent Salera, the founder of World’s Best Story. “We’re looking for a tale that audiences will love…which is why we’re empowering readers to judge this contest.”

Writers can enter by visiting WordsBestStory.com or logging onto FastPencil — and uploading their title, cover, blockbuster concept, and sample chapter. To be eligible for the final round of voting by a panel of best-selling authors — and the grand prize — contestants must upload a full manuscript to FastPencil. Readers will play a key role during every round of the contest through the finals. The contest has 5 judging periods:

May 28 – August 12 Entry period: Writers and readers sign up.

August 13 – September 10 Round 1: Readers review stories and narrow the field.

September 11 – October 8 Round 2: Readers rate Top 100 finalists.

October 9 – November 14: Round 3: Writers panel selects Top 10 finalists.

November 15: Grand Prize: Winner announced at the Toronto International Book Fair.

Have a big, bold book concept that you absolutely love and believe that readers will, too? Why not submit it to WorldsBestStory.com — and write on!
